Within the last decade Oro Valley has blossomed into a community of vibrance, beauty, and innovation. Not only has Oro Valley become a major draw for seasonal “snowbird” visitors, but it is becoming a well-renowned community for its business successes too. Major regional employers such as Ventana Medical Systems, Sanofi-Aventis, Oro Valley Hospital, The University of Arizona Bio5, and others have put Oro Valley on the map particularly in the bio-science arenas. Many accolades have followed the town’s growth and one of the latest magazine’s ranking Oro Valley among its “Best” list is Businessweek.
Praised as one of the “Best Places to Raise Kids” in 2013, Oro Valley achieved its high ranking from Businessweek based on an evaluation of small towns (populations from 5,000 – 50,000) utilizing objective criteria. The criteria analyzed such metrics as public school performance, safety, housing costs, commute time, poverty, adults’ educational attainment, share of households with children, and diversity. Also used in the determination was the local job market, particularly the median income and current unemployment. Excluded from the list were any places in which the median family income exceeded $115,866, which is the lower limit for the wealthiest 20% of US families.
