Step 24: Secure your new home

Many Buyers like to re-key a resale property after the closing to better protect the home. You simply never know if the Seller retained any keys, gave keys to a neighbor, babysitter, or some other person who they’ve completely forgotten about. Similarly, make sure to change any keypad combinations if a garage door keypad exists. Usually instructions are available on the device or online about resetting these.

If you’ve received a home warranty as part of the purchase you can check the policy to see if a re-key of the property is covered as a benefit. Some home warranty companies will cover this cost or charge a service call fee to have the property re-keyed.
